The Great Coffee Date Adventure: Meeting Barbara

You know those simple plans that somehow turn into a full-blown adventure? That was exactly what happened when Barbara and I decided to meet for coffee for the first time.

The plan seemed foolproof. We would meet halfway between where we both lived, grab a coffee, chat for a bit, and get to know each other. Easy, right?

We arrived at our chosen coffee shop around 4:00 PM. Things started off great. The conversation flowed naturally, we were enjoying ourselves, and it felt like we'd known each other longer than the few minutes we'd been sitting there.

Then, at what felt like the exact moment we settled in, an employee walked over and delivered the news:

"Just so you know, we're closing at 5:00 PM."

Excuse me? Closing? At 5:00 PM? Who closes a coffee shop at 5:00 PM?

Suddenly our relaxing coffee meetup turned into a race against the clock. Before we knew it, we were politely kicked out and standing outside trying to figure out where to go next.

"No problem," we thought. "We'll just find another place nearby."

Famous last words.

We drove to our second choice only to discover the place was completely shut down. Not closed for the evening. Shut down. As in no longer operating.

At this point, it felt like the universe was actively participating in our meetup.

Undeterred, we searched for another option. We found a place about a mile and a half away and headed over with cautious optimism.

As we walked in, we immediately realized something was happening.

At that exact moment, a room full of people jumped up and yelled:

"SURPRISE!"

For one brief second, I genuinely wondered if they were somehow welcoming us.

They weren't.

We had accidentally walked into a surprise baby shower.

Barbara and I looked at each other and started laughing. What were the odds? First we get kicked out of a coffee shop, then our backup location is permanently closed, and now we've crashed someone's baby shower.

I half expected someone to hand me a gift registry.

Standing there trying not to interrupt the celebration, we couldn't stop laughing. It was one of those moments where things are so ridiculous you just have to go with it.

After recovering from our accidental baby shower appearance, we agreed to try one final place.

Third time's the charm.

A few miles later, we arrived at a quaint little spot with a cozy ambiance, warm lighting, and surprisingly good food. Finally! A place that was open, functioning, and not hosting a surprise event.

We settled in, relaxed, and spent the rest of the evening talking and genuinely enjoying each other's company. After all the unexpected detours, it felt like we'd earned that conversation.

By the end of the night, Barbara and I agreed on something: the meetup was even better than we thought it would be.

What started as a simple coffee date became a comedy of errors involving an early-closing coffee shop, a closed business, an accidental baby shower appearance, and multiple location changes.

And honestly? It made the whole experience more memorable.

Because sometimes the best part of meeting someone new isn't when everything goes according to plan—it's when absolutely nothing does.
