Oh, I can't stand this girl. Who does she think she is?"
Those were probably some of the nicest thoughts I had about Dora when I first met her.
Our first encounter was on the selling floor at Neiman Marcus. We both worked in the handbag department, and we were both fiercely competitive. When I started, I was hungry for sales—and so was she. To be honest, sales were all that mattered to either of us.
I was ruthless when it came to selling, and Dora was just as determined. Every customer felt like a competition. Every sale felt like a battle. Instead of seeing her as a teammate, I saw her as my rival.
Day after day, I found myself consumed by my dislike for her. I would go to work already annoyed, expecting conflict. It became exhausting carrying around so much resentment.
Then one day I realized something had to change.
I couldn't keep letting my thoughts about Dora take up so much space in my head. So I decided to do something different. Instead of replaying all the reasons I didn't like her, I started intentionally thinking kind and forgiving thoughts about her.
It felt strange at first.
I would imagine us getting along. I even pictured myself hugging her and apologizing for all the tension and fighting. Looking back, it sounds a little crazy, but I truly believe those thoughts started changing my attitude.
Then something unexpected happened.
I came back from vacation with all my hair chopped off. Dora, who hadn't really spoken to me in months, looked at me and asked, "Did you cut your hair?"
"Yes, I did," I replied.
"Well, it looks very nice."
It was such a simple comment, but it changed everything.
For the first time, we had a real conversation.
After that day, we slowly started talking more. We would grab coffee together. Then lunch. We began opening up about our lives, our dreams, our struggles, and everything in between.
The more we talked, the more we realized how much we had in common.
The woman I had spent so much time disliking turned out to be caring, ambitious, and incredibly supportive. Once we stopped competing and started connecting, we were finally able to see the good in each other.
Our friendship grew naturally from there.
We started talking almost every day. We celebrated each other's wins, whether they were big milestones or small victories. We cheered each other on as we chased our goals and worked through life's challenges.
Over the years, we've both experienced major life changes, and through every season, we've been there for one another.
This December will mark twenty years of friendship.
Twenty years !!!
It's amazing to think that someone I once considered an enemy would become one of my closest and most treasured friends.
If there's one lesson I've learned from this experience, it's this:
Don't be too quick to judge people. Don't shut people out before you've given them a chance.
Sometimes the person you least expect can become one of the greatest blessings in your life.
I'm so thankful that I looked beyond my assumptions and gave our friendship a chance. Dora has been there through countless moments of laughter, growth, change, and support, and I am incredibly grateful to have her in my life today.
What started as a rivalry became a friendship that has lasted two decades—and that's a story I never could have imagined on that first day on the selling floor.

Friendships are one of life’s greatest gifts.
This is so beautiful! Real, honest and so inspiring!
